KUCHING (Feb 15): Discussions on oil and gas matters under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) are showing positive progress, said Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Datuk Ibrahim Baki.

He said that both Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) were working towards a commercial settlement.

“The discussions involve the state government, under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and federal government, under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as both parties seek to reach a mutually agreeable solution.

“There is positive progress, and we are hopeful of achieving a commercial settlement,” he told reporters after a Chinese New Year outreach programme at Jalan Nanas on Sunday.

Ibrahim acknowledged that court proceedings were a separate matter.

“The court (case) is another matter, but we are trying to resolve this as both sides have their respective positions. Our view is to maintain our existing laws and to respect the law.

“We want clarity, and everyone should wait until we can reach a settlement. At the same time, we will follow the court’s ruling,” he said.
