KUCHING: AIDA International has suspended an Instructor Trainer pending a formal investigation into serious allegations concerning the killing of a protected sea turtle.
The international freediving body announced the suspension today (Sept 16) after the incident drew anger from members of the diving and marine conservation community.
“We share the anger and disgust expressed by our community regarding the killing of a sea turtle, and unequivocally condemn the deliberate killing or any mistreatment of protected marine life,” AIDA said in a statement.
It stressed that protecting the marine environment was a fundamental responsibility expected of those representing the organisation.
“Our instructors are expected to lead by example, respect and protect marine life, comply with applicable laws, and act as ambassadors for the oceans,” it said.
AIDA, however, said it also had a responsibility to establish the facts surrounding the allegations and consider all available information before reaching any conclusions.
The Instructor Trainer has therefore been suspended while a formal investigation is carried out.
“This suspension is a precautionary measure and does not represent a finding regarding the allegations,” it said.
AIDA added that it would not publicly discuss the evidence or individuals involved while the investigation remains ongoing in order to protect the integrity of the process.
The development follows widespread attention surrounding allegations that a diving instructor was involved in the killing of a protected sea turtle, after footage of the alleged incident circulated online.
The case has prompted condemnation within the diving and conservation community, with questions also raised over the responsibilities of diving professionals towards marine environments and protected wildlife
