KUCHING, June 3: The driver’s loss of control while attempting to overtake a tractor is believed to have triggered the devastating crash that killed five family members, including a two-year-old baby girl, at Jalan Engsengei near Kampung Lubok Ria in Serian this morning.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the incident occurred at about 8.10am when a Perodua Bezza, travelling from Kampung Lubok Ria towards Serian, is believed to have veered out of control while overtaking a tractor moving in the same direction.
“The vehicle skidded off the road, struck an iron pipe on the right shoulder, and plunged into a water-filled drain before overturning,” he said in a statement today.
The victims, including a 30-year-old man, a 47-year-old woman, a 26-year-old woman, a 16-year-old girl, and a two-year-old girl were confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics from Serian Hospital.
“The victims were believed to be members of the same family, and among them was a two-year-old child who was reportedly ejected from the vehicle upon impact,” he added.
Their remains were taken to Serian Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Mohamad Zainal reminded motorists to exercise extreme caution during overtaking manoeuvres, particularly on rural roads with limited visibility.
He also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information that could interfere with ongoing investigations. — DayakDaily
