MIRI (July 26): A proposed renewable energy plant could transform Baram’s economic landscape when it is implemented, said Datuk Gerawat Gala.

The Deputy Minister in Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring) and Highland Development Agency (HDA) deputy chairman said the Sarawak government had granted in-principle approval for Planet QEOS to conduct feasibility studies on generating between 500 megawatt capacity (MWAC) and 4,000 MWAC of renewable power through solar in Baram.

He called on the company to start engaging with communities where the feasibility study is to be conducted to ensure the people have the right information and correct understand in order to give their cooperation and support.

“We do not wish our Baram to miss this opportunity due to misinformation or lack of understanding of the project.

“I believe the success of this initiative by Planet QEOS will also translate into improved infrastructure and accessibility and digital connectivity for our rural communities in Baram,” he told The Borneo Post.

In a statement yesterday, Planet QEOS had said the in-principle approval would enable the construction of a solar plant, which would seamlessly integrate with the main grid operated by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), pending the conclusion of the feasibility study.

The company said the study will also include a dedicated 180km Green Energy Grid to be established along the decommissioned Sabah Sarawak Gas Pipeline, that will directly connect renewable energy from Baram to Tanjung Kidurong, Bintulu, ensuring efficient distribution and utilisation.

Phase 1 of the project represents a substantial investment of up to RM2 billion with the aim to revolutionise renewable energy generation, address critical food security issues, and create thousands of new jobs in renewable energy and food technology within the Baram region.

Gerawat said the current electricity supply through the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (Sares), which is powered by solar, has limited capacity.

“The Planet QEOS study to supply 500 megawatts of power will significantly increase the availability and reliability of renewable power, which can boost agricultural, tourism, and other economic activities to improve the standard of living of our Baram rural communities,” he said.

He added the local community would hopefully have a stake in the project as a long-term benefit besides job and economic opportunities in supply and procurement of services for the project.
