KAPIT (Aug 3): It was an emotional event for many former servicemen who attended the Warriors Day 2024 celebration at the town square here today.

Organised by the Kapit branch of Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM), the grand assembly involved the participation of 472 people comprising former members of the Malaysian Army, the Royal Rangers (Brigade 9) and 510 Territorial Army, as well as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) of Kapit District, Civil Defence Force and Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Native Laws and Customs) and Bukit Goram assemblyman Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat officiated at the event.

“We must never forget the contributions and sacrifices of our former servicemen.

“They have laid the foundation of modern Malaysia.

“To our veterans, I assure you that the government recognises your contributions.

“The PVATM, registered under the Veterans Department of the Defence Ministry, is also there to help.

“We, the elected representatives, have the allocations meant to help our veterans,” he said in his speech.

Adding on, Jamit hailed the hosting of Warriors Day in Kapit as ‘most suitable’, with the district having produced many ‘Bujang Berani’ (Brave Warriors).

“This is more than just a celebration, as it carries an important message to the younger generation, which is honouring the roles played by our former servicemen in safeguarding and upholding the nation and its sovereignty.”

Meanwhile in his remarks, PVATM Kapit chairman Councilor Martin Bilun called upon the veterans who had yet to register as members of the association, to do so as soon as possible.

“We will assist them to register as members,” he added.

Former commander of the Eastern Field Command, Lt-Gen (Rtd) Datuk Stephen Mundaw, the patron of PVATM, also attended the event.
