RM10 mln allocated to develop Terbat Tagang as ecotourism destination

SERIAN, Sept 17: An allocation of RM10 million has been approved for the Terbat Tagang Integrated Tourism Facilities Development Project at Kampung Terbat Mawang, aimed at enhancing the area as an ecotourism destination while creating new economic opportunities for the local community.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben said the project is being implemented under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) and involves the acquisition of 4.84 hectares of land.

The Kedup assemblyman said the development would feature a range of facilities to improve visitor comfort and enhance the appeal of the Terbat Tagang System as a rural tourism attraction.

“The project will involve the construction of several facilities, including a pavilion, parking area, mini market, public toilets, gazebo, substation, cafeteria and campsite,” he said when speaking during Malaysia Deputy Minister of Economy Dato Sri Muhd Shahar Abdullah’s official working visit to the Tagang System Project at Kampung Terbat Mawang here today.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Martin said the integrated facilities were expected to add value to the area by attracting more visitors and generating economic opportunities for the local community.

He added that the development would also contribute to efforts to strengthen the rural tourism sector through better-organised, more comfortable and visitor-friendly infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Muhd Shahar said the Tagang System should continue to be preserved and proactively promoted to ensure that natural resource conservation efforts deliver long-term benefits to local communities.

He said the system also had potential to be further developed as a community-based ecotourism product, in line with the emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship in the country’s development planning.

“The 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) is the country’s five-year development planning document, covering all states, including Sarawak.

“As leaders and policymakers at the national level, we place emphasis on sustainability in every development plan,” he said.

Muhd Shahar said the Tagang System, which was established and developed by the local community, should continue to be preserved through the cooperation of all stakeholders.

He also called for more proactive efforts to promote the project, raise public awareness and showcase its potential in community-based ecotourism and natural resource conservation.

He stressed that such efforts were important to ensure the benefits of the Tagang System could be enjoyed by the present generation while safeguarding the resource for future generations.

He expressed hope that all parties would continue to play their respective roles in ensuring the sustainability of the Tagang System and strengthening ongoing natural resource conservation efforts.

Meanwhile, Kampung Terbat Mawang village chief Francis John said the Tagang project initially involved residents from three villages, including Kampung Muara Ahi.

Also present were representatives of the Serian Division Deputy Resident Abdul Khalid Manap and Tebedu District Officer Gerald George Entigar. — DayakDaily
