KUCHING, Feb 15: The government has selected Sarawak as one of two locations for the deployment of a Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS), a key initiative aimed at strengthening maritime security, particularly in waters containing oil and gas facilities and major shipping lanes.

According to Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, two MPMS are currently under construction, with the other to be stationed at the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

He said the decision was made after considering security factors, current threats, and the need for more systematic surveillance in vast and high-risk waters.

Additionally, he said that four maritime helicopters to be received will be based in Sabah following assessments of current needs, including monitoring offshore platforms and the increase in maritime industry activities.

“Malaysia has maritime waters covering about 556,286 square kilometres, with more than 90 per cent of the country’s trade dependent on sea routes, while the fisheries sector is also a major source of livelihood for the people,” he said.

He said this at a press conference held in conjunction with the 21st anniversary celebration of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the opening of the Miri Maritime Zone Complex today, as reported by TVS.

Meanwhile, he said that the Home Ministry will continue to strengthen MMEA’s capabilities through continuous training, the use of modern technology and enhanced assets to ensure a constant high level of preparedness. — DayakDaily
