S’wak Day 2026 celebration in Sibu: Konsert Rakyat, thanksgiving ceremonies among events lined up

SIBU, June 19: Seven events comprising official programmes, religious gatherings, community sports activities, and public entertainment will be held in conjunction with the Sarawak Day 2026 celebration, which is scheduled to take place in Sibu from July 20 to 22.

According to TVS, Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who is also the minister in charge of this year’s celebration, said this year’s theme is ‘Sarawak Maju Makmur’ (A Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak), with thousands of people from various ethnic communities across the State expected to attend.

The seven key events lined up for the celebration are a sales carnival, an interfaith thanksgiving ceremony, a Zumba programme, a thanksgiving ceremony, a unity walk, a town hall session, and the Sarawak Day assembly, which will conclude with the Konsert Rakyat.

“The sales carnival will be held over three days at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang from July 20 to 22, from 10am to 10pm, with a target of 5,000 visitors.

“The interfaith thanksgiving ceremony is scheduled for July 20 at Kingwood Hotel Sibu, with an expected attendance of 1,000 people.

“On July 21, a Zumba programme will be held at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang in the morning with about 5,000 participants, while the thanksgiving ceremony at Masjid An-Nur Sibu will take place at 8pm, with an expected attendance of 1,000,” he said today.

Meanwhile, the Unity Walk on July 22 is expected to draw up to 10,000 participants, beginning at 6am at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang, followed by a town hall programme at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) at 2pm.

In the evening, the Sarawak Day assembly and Konsert Rakyat will be held at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang starting at 8pm, with a target attendance of 5,000 people.

The concert will feature local artists including Ricky Anderson, Kelly, Claudia, Priscilla Abby and Ericson, as well as popular singer Mimi Fly.

According to Lee, Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, are expected to attend as guests of honour, along with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He also called on the public to participate in the celebrations and to fly the Jalur Gemilang and the Sarawak flags at government buildings, business premises, schools, and homes as a sign of patriotism.

Meanwhile, Lee said preparations for the Sarawak Day 2026 celebration are currently being actively carried out through the establishment of several sub-committees to coordinate all planned programmes.

“To date, three meetings have been held to ensure smooth preparations. We have also inspected the event venues to ensure preparations can be carried out more thoroughly.

“This morning, we discussed various matters related to the events, and preparations are being undertaken in earnest,” he said. — DayakDaily
