KUCHING: Three packages of the elevated road project in Sebuyau will be presented to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in the near future.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the appointed consultant is currently preparing the plan, ensuring the project is progressing as scheduled.

“We are currently assessing the cost before presenting it to the Premier. Once he approves, we will announce the cost. The deep peat area poses challenges that could lead to uneven roads.

“We are exploring how this elevated road can enhance our road quality in the near future,” he told reporters after officiating at the International Conference of Tropical Geoengineering (Tropicon) 2024 at a leading hotel here, today.

Uggah, who is also the Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, hoped that the conference would yield positive outcomes, particularly innovative solutions to support Sarawak’s development.

Highlighting the challenges, Uggah noted that Sarawak’s vast land includes 1.6 million hectares of peat area, complicating construction efforts.

“If we can adopt new, cost-effective technologies to stabilise peat, it would be a significant advancement.

“Developing peat areas is costly, but with new technology, it can be done more affordably and stably, which is crucial,” he said.

Also present was Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo.
