KUCHING (Aug 6): A total 244 official vehicles comprising buses and vans will be used to transport athletes to 50 sports venues throughout Sarawak during the coming 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma), said Deputy State Secretary Datu Hii Chang Kee.

Hii, who is Sukma Sarawak chief executive officer, said these vehicles will be affixed with the official Sukma 2024 logo to make it easier for the public to identify them.

“We are calling on the people of Sarawak, especially in Kuching and other areas, to work together to facilitate the movement of official vehicles such as buses, vans, or cars accompanied by police escorts to be given the right of way.

“The most important thing is that we don’t want the athletes to be late attending sports events because the delay could cause their participation to be cancelled, so we don’t want that to happen,” he said after a Sukma Sarawak 2024 Dry Run session around the Sarawak Sports Complex today.

He said while the athletes have been advised to leave the sports village two hours earlier, the inevitable traffic congestion will be the main problem.

In this regard, he said police and the Road Transport Department personnel will be deployed help ensure smooth traffic throughout Sukma XXI.

At a separate event, Hii said the Immigration and Customs departments are actively making final preparations at Kuching International Airport counters for the smooth handling of the arriving Sukma contingents.

He said both departments are fully prepared to welcome the arrival of the 12,616 athletes and officials, including from Brunei Darussalam.
