SUPP Bawang Assan brings Mid-Autumn cheer to 28 households

SIBU: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch brought Mid-Autumn Festival greetings to 28 households in Sg Empawah and Bukit Igu through a house-to-house community outreach programme.

Branch Chairman, Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, accompanied by Penghulu Wong Ung, Penghulu Tiew Siik Nieng, Kapitan Chew Hoo Kiong, Kapitan Ting Siew Kiew, Councillor Rory Wong and Councillor Justin Wong, recently led the team on a visit to 13 households in the Sg. Empawah area.

The team distributed mooncakes while engaging residents in face-to-face conversations on their daily circumstances, concerns and needs.

Lau, who is also SUPP Youth Chief, said the outreach was intended to go beyond the customary exchange of festive greetings, stressing that direct engagement was important in understanding issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.

“Through visits like these, we hope to have more opportunities to communicate with and understand our residents. Many times, it is only by actually going into the community and visiting residents in their homes that we can hear their voices directly and better understand their needs,” he added.

He described the mooncakes as a small gesture symbolising the spirit of reunion and sharing associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival.

“Although the mooncakes are only a small token, we hope that residents can feel our care and concern for them. Regardless of their family circumstances, we hope to share the joy of the festive season with everyone,” he reiterated.

The outreach continued that afternoon, with Kapitan Tang Chuo Ging leading members of Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Bukit Igu and the Bawang Assan Branch team to another 15 households.

Among those visited were single-parent families and households facing financial difficulties.

Mooncakes were distributed and festive greetings extended during the visits.

Lau said the differing circumstances of families underscored the need for community engagement to be sustained beyond festive periods.

“Community care should not only take place during festive occasions. It requires us to maintain continuous contact with residents,” he added.

He also stressed the importance of cooperation between the branch, community leaders and JKKK members in identifying residents who may require assistance.

“We also hope to maintain good cooperation with community leaders and the members of the JKKK under their leadership, so that we can provide assistance to residents in need within our capabilities,” he said.

Lau thanked the community leaders and branch members who took part in the outreach, saying the branch would continue strengthening its grassroots presence and remain attentive to residents’ concerns.

“We hope to continue improving our community services step by step, truly reaching out to residents, understanding and caring for them, and doing whatever we can to contribute to the community,” he concluded.
