Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar
KUCHING (Feb 16): The Chinese community in Sarawak has long played an important role in the state’s development, especially in the fields of economy and entrepreneurship, said Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
The Sarawak Governor said the community has been the backbone of many key sectors, including trade, agriculture, commercial farming, modern industries, small and medium enterprises, as well as investments, which have contributed significantly to economic progress.
“Generally, the Chinese community also plays significant roles in politics, education and social sectors, contributing to Sarawak’s success as a progressive and harmonious region,” he said in his Lunar New Year message.
The Head of State pointed out that in line with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, the Sarawak government remains transparent, inclusive and attentive to the welfare of all Sarawakians, including the Chinese community.
“Various forms of assistance and support are provided, particularly in education and welfare.
“In 2024, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, around RM22 million was allocated to Chinese-medium schools of which RM12 million went to Chinese-aided primary schools and RM10 million for Chinese-aided secondary schools.
“This represents an increase from RM9 million to RM12 million for primary schools compared to the previous year, reflecting the government’s commitment to talent development and strengthening multi-stream education,” he said, noting that this assistance forms part of efforts to develop highly skilled human capital and achieve developed state status by 2030.
The Yang di-Pertua Negeri also stressed that the state government has continued to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate, enabling Chinese school students to pursue studies at Sarawak-owned universities, including in strategic fields such as satellite and aerospace technology.
Various welfare initiatives are also implemented, including the Sejambak Kasih Chinese New Year Programme to assist lower-income groups, as well as monthly financial aid through the Welfare Department and funding for places of worship via the Unit for Other Religions, he added.
Wan Junaidi called on all Sarawakians to play their respective roles and continue supporting the state’s development agenda while preserving unity and harmony for future generations.
“I record my appreciation to all communities, including the Chinese community, who serve on the frontlines as volunteers and community leaders for the safety and well-being of the people, including during festive seasons.
“Your dedication reflects the resilience and loyalty symbolised by the Year of the Horse,” he said.
He said Chinese New Year symbolises unity and opportunity, with the Year of the Horse traditionally associated with energy, courage, and diligence.
Wan Junaidi noted that in Sarawak, the celebration reflects strong inter-ethnic harmony through the open house tradition, which allows people of various backgrounds to visit one another and foster goodwill.
“My wife and I are proud to see the open house culture remain vibrant during every festive celebration in Sarawak. It reflects the strong and enduring unity among the diverse communities in the State.
“It is a special time for us to stand ‘Segulai and Sejalai’ (together in unity) in practising the spirit of unity that forms the foundation of our strength,” he said.
Drawing an analogy to the tossing of Yee Sang, he said Sarawak’s diverse communities, each with their own distinct culture, language and traditions, become stronger and more harmonious when united.
“Let us continue to preserve and respect this diversity, for it is the most valuable and unique treasure possessed by the people of Sarawak, in line with our slogan ‘Segulai Sejalai.’
“On behalf of the Sarawak government, we will continue striving to drive economic growth and ensure that prosperity is enjoyed fairly by all segments of society, including the B40 and M40 groups.
“It is important for all parties, particularly the business community, to work hand in hand to ensure the well-being of Sarawakians,” said Wan Junaidi.
