KUCHING, June 4: A weak earthquake measuring magnitude 2.9 at a depth of 10 kilometres occurred in Mambong, Sarawak on Tuesday (June 2), with tremors felt in several areas around Samarahan and Serian.
Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) confirmed that the earthquake struck at 10.33pm and was centred at latitude 1.32° North and longitude 110.39° East.
In a statement today, MET Malaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the earthquake was classified as weak and posed no cause for public concern.
Earlier on the same day, another weak earthquake measuring magnitude 2.9 at a depth of 10km was recorded in Ranau, Sabah at 10.36am.
Mohd Hisham said the Sabah earthquake was centred at latitude 6.07° North and longitude 116.58° East, with tremors reported in several areas around Kundasang, Ranau and Kota Belud.
MET Malaysia said it would continue monitoring seismic activity and provide updates from time to time.
