Wong vows to improve water supply if elected Lanang MP

SIBU: SUPP Dudong chairman Wong Ching Yong has pledged to address water supply and flash flood problems in Sibu Jaya and secure assistance for underprivileged families, if elected as the Lanang Member of Parliament.

Speaking at the SUPP Dudong luncheon held in conjunction with the Mooncake Festival on Wednesday (Sept 16), Wong said he was confident that a stable water supply could be provided to Sibu Jaya, similar to that enjoyed by residents in Sibu city centre.

“If I am elected as the Member of Parliament for Lanang, I promise that the residents of Sibu Jaya will get a stable water supply.

“I will work closely with Sarawak Water and am very confident that this promise can be realised,” he said.

On the recurring flash flood problem in Sibu Jaya, Wong said he would seek additional allocations from both the Sarawak and federal governments to formulate a master plan for the area’s irrigation system.

“I promise that this problem will be resolved by obtaining more allocations from the Sarawak and federal governments to draw up a master plan for the irrigation system in Sibu Jaya,” he said.

Wong also pledged to work with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government to secure additional funding or loans to repair and maintain houses belonging to underprivileged families.

He cited his previous success in securing an HDC loan totalling RM14 million for 25 longhouses in Dudong.

“I once successfully obtained an HDC loan of RM14 million for 25 longhouses in Dudong,” he said.

He also said elected representatives should be judged by what they delivered to the people rather than merely serving as salary earners.

“People’s representatives are not just salary earners. If you just sit in the office and get paid, but don’t bring anything, the YB is useless,” he said.

Wong, who is not currently an elected representative, pointed to his ability to secure funding for longhouses as an example of what he could deliver.

“I’m not a YB, but I can bring HDC loans for longhouses,” he said.

He added that GPS representatives remained committed to ensuring allocations under the Minor Rural Project (MRP) and Rural Transformation Project (RTP) reached the people, while larger development projects would also be pursued.

Wong said his pledges were not merely campaign promises but a commitment he was prepared to stand by if elected.

“This is not a sweet promise or a flattering promise. This is my guarantee. If you don’t pay it, I won’t dare to promise,” he said.
