KUCHING, July 13: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg paid a courtesy call on the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfur-Lah, at Istana Hinggap Perak today.
According to a post on Facebook, the audience was held to present a formal letter of invitation and seek Sultan Nazrin’s consent to officiate the International Waqf Da’wah Convention 2026, which is scheduled to be held at the Plenary Hall of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on July 27,
During the audience, Abang Johari, who is also president of the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim), briefed Sultan Nazrin on the convention, including its objectives and Perkim’s aspiration to strengthen the waqf institution as a catalyst for the development of Islamic outreach (da’wah), education, welfare, and the empowerment of Muslim converts (mualaf).
The convention is expected to bring together waqf experts, Islamic scholars, academics, and Muslim leaders from Malaysia and several other countries, including Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Sri Lanka, Libya, and Thailand, to exchange experiences and share sustainable waqf models.
Among the convention’s key focuses are discussions on sustainable waqf financing models to support continuous da’wah efforts, as well as exploring international collaboration in the development of waqf institutions.
Perkim hopes the convention’s outcomes will lead to the implementation of policies and strategic cooperation among waqf institutions, the government, state Islamic religious councils, Islamic financial institutions, and da’wah organisations.
Also accompanying the Premier was Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU, and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi. — DayakDaily
