Johorean man, foreign woman in Kuching jailed for drug possession

KUCHING (Aug 1): A Johorean man and an Indonesian woman were sentenced to seven months and six months imprisonment, respectively by the Magistrates’ Court here today for possessing drugs.

Magistrates Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali meted out the sentence against Muhammad Safiuddin Ahmad, 30, and Lili Marsanda, 20, after they pleaded guilty to a charge Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

The Section carries a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment up to five years or both, upon conviction.

Based on the facts of the case, a team of police arrested the two individuals, who were in a sedan car parked behind a laundry shop near Taman Duranda, Siburan at around 12pm on May 20 this year on suspicion of being involved in drug-related activities.

A subsequent search of the car uncovered a small transparent plastic packet containing crystalline substance on the passenger seat.

A chemist’s report dated July 11, 2024, confirmed the substance as 0.09 grammes of methamphetamine.

The case was prosecuted by ASP Arman Ibrahim while Muhammad Safiuddin and Lili were unrepresented by counsel.
