Kuching city — a clean and peaceful place that is sprawling with modernity yet retains its unique identity. Heritage is a strong focus, with younger generations appreciating the city’s arts and culture. Since its elevation to city status in 1988, Kuching has undergone remarkable changes.
Although it may not be as bustling or developed as other cities, it remains a beloved city for those who grew up embracing it. Synonymous with its food, culture, and historical background, here are four Kuchingites’ descriptions of the city they love and why they cherish it:
Michael Pengiran Liew Boon Boon, 28
Kuching is a city that beautifully blends modernity with rich cultural heritage. I love its vibrant and diverse communities, historic architecture, and the abundance of delicious food, especially the local Sarawak laksa and kolo mee. The natural surroundings, such as the picturesque waterfront, lush parks, and nearby rainforests, offer a perfect escape into nature. The friendliness and warmth of the people make it feel like home, and there’s always a festival or event showcasing the unique traditions and arts of Sarawak.

As someone who has been away from Kuching for over a decade in search of greener pastures in Malaysia’s capital city, I miss the food the most. I also miss the people of Kuching, with their diverse languages and dialects being spoken while sitting in a coffee shop and chatting about life. I love Kuching for its vintage facade and rich heritage, and I am glad that it is being well taken care of.
Lim Hui Sze, 30
Definitely no ‘honk honk’ on the road, along with cleanliness, friendly people, and a vibe that is peaceful yet subtly bustling — these are what I love about Kuching. I might be biased since it is home, but it is hard to pinpoint exactly what makes it so lovable. I honestly cannot think of anything to dislike about it.
Carlucci Noel, 34
It has been almost a year since I moved away from Kuching to seize a new work opportunity, and while I have been adapting to the bustling life in KL, my heart always longs for home. Kuching holds a special place in my heart, filled with cherished memories. One of my fondest memories is breakfast time with my family, especially with my late dad. Another treasured memory is the night drives in Kuching, particularly along the Waterfront area. The serene atmosphere and calming views always brought a sense of peace that is hard to find elsewhere. Living in Kuala Lumpur is a stark contrast to the more laid-back lifestyle of Kuching. However, no matter how much I admire KL, Kuching will always be home to me. Perhaps it is the loved ones I have left behind or the familiar places that carry so many memories. Kuching’s unique culture and local highlights are something I miss dearly. There are countless things I could say about Kuching — from family and friends to food and scenery. However, words often fall short of capturing the true essence of what Kuching means to me. Whenever someone asks, “What does Kuching mean to you?” my answer is always simple yet profound: “Home”.
