KUCHING: A hot weather alert has been issued on eight areas in Sarawak by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

It named Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Lubuk Antu, Kapit, Miri, Marudi and Telang Usan, as having recorded Level 1 hot weather conditions (alert).

The alert, posted on the department’s website, was updated on Monday (July 29) at 6am.

A Level 1 warning is issued when a location experiences temperatures ranging from 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days.

According to MetMalaysia’s draught monitoring report, the country is currently experiencing the Southwest Monsoon season, which began on May 17 and is expected to end in mid-September.

“During the Southwest Monsoon, winds usually blow consistently from the southwest, bringing lower humidity and a more stable atmosphere resulting in less cloud formation and reduced rainfall during this period

“Consequently, most places across the country will experience lower rainfall distribution, with more dry days compared to rainy days,” the department said.

Meanwhile, the State Health Department in its Facebook post has been advising the public to take necessary precautions during the hot weather.

“To maintain your health in hot weather, ensure you stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and limit your time outside.

“Moreover, reduce your consumption of caffeinated, alcoholic, and sugary drinks, use air conditioning or fans to cool down, wear light, loose, and bright clothing, and shield yourself from the sun with a hat or umbrella,” it said.

The department also advised parents to monitor their children closely during the hot weather.

“Make sure they avoid playing outside during extreme heat, stay hydrated by drinking water frequently, and use an umbrella or hat when they are outdoors,” it said.
