Respecting MA63, IGC Report fundamental to Malaysia’s prosperity – Awang Tengah

KUCHING, Sept 16: Respecting the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report remains fundamental to preserving the core spirit behind the nation’s formation, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

In his special Malaysia Day 2026 message, Awang Tengah stressed that both documents serve as more than historical records, representing the binding trust, mutual respect, and constitutional assurances that underpin the federation.

“Respecting MA63 and the IGC Report means respecting the spirit of Malaysia itself, a federation built on trust, mutual respect, and recognition of the rights and interests of all parties,” he said.

Highlighting Sarawak’s economic evolution over the past six decades, Awang Tengah disclosed that the state has secured over RM 116 billion in domestic direct investment (DDI) and foreign direct investment (FDI) over the five years since 2021.

However, he emphasized that progress must extend beyond headline economic statistics to deliver tangible public benefits.

“Meaningful development must translate into a better future, quality education, well-paying jobs, and wider economic opportunities for the people.

“When a family, whether in an urban or rural area, enjoys a better quality of life, that is a changing Sarawak, a developed, high-income Sarawak,” Awang Tengah added.

He noted that the strength of the nation relies directly on the prosperity of its constituent regions and states.

“When Sarawak progresses, Malaysia changes. When Sarawak prospers, Malaysia becomes more prosperous,” he said, calling on all Malaysians to reinforce national unity and safeguard shared achievements for future generations. – TVS
