KUCHING, July 13: The Sarawak government has allocated over RM500 million for the upgrading of sports facilities and the opening ceremony of the 34th SEA Games, which will be held in Kuching in September 2027.
According to Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, upgrading and refurbishment works on sports facilities across the State are progressing smoothly and are expected to be fully completed before June 2027.
He said the opening ceremony alone is expected to cost RM350 million, while approximately RM280 million has been allocated for the upgrading of sports facilities.
“We are confident that all projects will be completed on schedule, with all facilities expected to be fully ready before June 2027, including the Sarawak Stadium, which is currently undergoing major upgrading and refurbishment works,” he said at a press conference after the launch of the logo, mascot, and theme for the 34th SEA Games and the 14th ASEAN Para Games Malaysia 2027 here today, as reported by TVS.
Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said Sarawak will host 17 sporting events during the SEA Games.
He added that the State is also prepared to organise a torch relay as part of efforts to build public excitement ahead of the regional sporting event.
“The torch relay is expected to begin this September and will involve participation from communities across the country,” he said.
Earlier, Abdul Karim said the newly launched futuristic-themed mascot symbolises a forward-looking vision and the spirit of unity regardless of race or background.
He also expressed hope that hosting the SEA Games would strengthen national unity while fostering greater public support for the Malaysian contingent.
The 34th SEA Games will be held from September 9 to 20, 2027, with Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Penang serving as co-hosts.
The 14th Asean Para Games are scheduled to take place from October 17 to 23, 2027. — DayakDaily
