Sarawak set to become aerospace hub; MITI to help

KUCHING: Sarawak is poised to become a hub for the aerospace industry in Borneo, with a particular focus on the green aerospace sector.

Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz assured that the federal government, through the National Aerospace Industry Corporation Malaysia (NAICO) – an agency under the ministry – will collaborate with the state government to develop this industry.

Highlighting Sarawak’s strategic location near several neighbouring countries, Tengku Zafrul reaffirmed that the state has significant potential for aerospace development.

“In terms of the aerospace sector, it is one of the five focal points in our national investment policy. The economic benefits for the people and our small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are substantial.

“Geographically, Sarawak’s location is excellent, as it is close to Nusantara, South Korea, Japan and even Australia.

“Recently, Sarawak also announced its plan to produce talent through local universities. Therefore, the talent aspect is well covered,” he said.

He said this during a press conference after attending the Sarawak Joint Committee for Industry Coordination Meeting (JBI) at the Pullman Hotel here Monday.

He also noted that this initiative aligns with the Sarawak government’s plan to expand the aerospace industry through the construction of a new airport, as announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Tengku Zafrul added that Sarawak has an advantage in green energy, which is crucial for the aerospace industry as it requires substantial renewable energy.

“With Sarawak already hosting a semiconductor technology hub, this can attract investors interested in green energy production,” he added.

As such, he emphasised three main focuses in developing the aerospace industry in Sarawak.

“Firstly, there is maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services.

“The second focus is on manufacturing, as many sectors within the aerospace industry require companies involved in manufacturing.

“Lastly, we consider green energy, which Sarawak already possesses, as the aerospace industry requires a significant amount of renewable energy.

“We are working together with the Sarawak government, similar to our collaboration in Selangor at Subang Airport, focusing solely on the aerospace industry and not on passenger, cargo, logistics, or other sectors,” he said.
