DARO: Two elderly individuals were among three who sustained burns after their house in Kampung Bruit, was engulfed in flames yesterday (July 2).
The victims are a 79-year-old man who suffered burns on both hands, chest and back; a 76-year-old woman with burns on her back; and a 32-year-old woman with burns on her left hand.
All of them have been taken to Betanak health clinic for treatment and will be referred to the Sibu Hospital for further medical attention.
Meanwhile, on the incident, firefighters from Daro station was dispatched to the scene, about 47km away, after receiving a distress call at 4.35 pm. Bruit auxiliary firefighters were also deployed to reinforce the team.
Upon arrival, they discovered that the residence, built under the housing programme for the hardcore poor (PPRT), were beyond salvage.
It was reported that the house was inhabited by nine residents, six of whom managed to evacuate safely, while three sustained burns during their escape.
The extinguishing deed was performed using water sourced from three private water tanks as there was insufficient open water source.
The flames were brought under control at 6.20 pm. Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 6.55 pm.
The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
